About Mark

Mark Dunlap, M.A., M.F.T.
Mark has been involved with personal growth, education and therapy for 35 years, since he was in his early 20's.  Over the years his interests have included integrative body-mind therapies such as Gestalt, neo-Reichian, and Somatic Experiencing, as well as leading men's groups and anger management groups. He has led workshops at Esalen Institute at Big Sur and has taught Adult Education courses through SBCC since the 1970's.

He met and fell in love with Dora in 1982 and they married in 1983.

"About 1990 I began thinking, "There must a better marriage than the one we're having."   Dora and I had been married about 7 years, and though most people would say we had a pretty good marriage, we were arguing more than we wanted, feeling disconnected sometimes, and not feeling like we were having the relationship we could really be having.  We were both trained as therapists, yet I didn’t feel like I really understood what was going on in marriage, or how to do it well.  We chanced across Harville Hendrix’s book Getting the Love You Want.  It made so much sense that we went to a workshop with him.  We found it so helpful that we each began training in his method, Imago Therapy. Since then I have specialized in couples therapy - I find great satisfaction in helping couples transform their relationships into ones that are truly satisfying and fulfilling."

Mark currently spends about half of his time working with couples, and the rest with individual clients, often focusing on helping them with their relationship issues.  He teaches classes on relationship twice per year for Santa Barbara City College Adult Education.
He has a Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology and is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (CA Lic. # 29855) as well as a Certified Imago Therapist.
